Why the English-Language Market Matters for Ukrainian Books
During the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Culture Bohdana Laiuk emphasized that the English-language book market plays a key role in shaping global trends.

Background: What Is the London Book Fair?
The London Book Fair is one of the most influential forums in the global publishing industry. The fair has been held annually in London since 1971. It is considered one of the three most important international publishing events alongside the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.
Each year, the London Book Fair brings together more than 1,000 exhibitors from over 60 countries and approximately 30,000 visitors. Among them are publishers, literary agents, authors, translators, editors, distributors, media representatives, and digital platform professionals.
Unlike many literary festivals, the London Book Fair is primarily focused on the professional publishing community and the global book business. It is a key venue where publishers from different countries negotiate major deals, including:
- the sale of translation rights
- International book distribution
- film and television adaptations of literary works
- joint publishing projects
- The development of new literary markets.
One of the central features of the fair is the International Rights Centre, a dedicated space where literary agents and publishers hold thousands of meetings to negotiate book rights. Many titles that later become international bestsellers begin their journey with agreements made at this venue.
In addition to business meetings, the London Book Fair hosts dozens of professional conferences, panel discussions, and presentations focused on the future of publishing. Topics include digital publishing, artificial intelligence in the book industry, literary translation, emerging authors, and promoting smaller languages in global literature.
The fair gives special attention to international translation programs. Many countries present initiatives designed to encourage foreign publishers to translate their national literature. As a result, the London Book Fair has become an important platform for promoting national cultures and literary voices on the global stage.
For Ukraine, participation in the London Book Fair is strategically important. Through literature, Ukrainian publishers introduce the world to contemporary Ukrainian culture, find new international partners, and open new markets for Ukrainian authors. Events like this help integrate Ukraine’s publishing industry into the global cultural space while also maintaining international attention on Ukraine.
